About Best Car Checks
Best Car Checks compares UK car history check providers so you can choose the right check before you buy a used car, and understand what you’re paying for.
What we do
We compare 10 providers on the same five criteria: the checks they include, what they cost, how clearly they flag risk, how transparent their pricing is and how easy their reports are to use. Each provider gets a written review with a score for every criterion and the reason behind it, the packages and prices it sells, and the sources we checked. You should be able to choose a check from this site even if you never click through to a provider.
How we compare providers
Scores are weighted and added up to give an overall score out of 10, and the ranking is that score from highest to lowest. The methodology sets out the weights, the scoring guide, how we compare prices and what we treat as a full check.
Where our information comes from
We prefer primary sources: each provider’s own product, pricing and guarantee pages, and official sources such as GOV.UK, DVLA and DVSA. Every review lists the pages we used and the date we checked them. When we can’t confirm a fact directly, we say so and score conservatively rather than guess.
Prices and features change
Providers change prices, run promotions and alter what their packages include. We review the information periodically and when we’re told something has changed, and every review shows the date its facts were last verified. Always confirm the price and contents on the provider’s site before you pay.
Independent and impartial
Best Car Checks is an independent comparison site. Every provider is assessed against the same published methodology, and we publish every score, weight and reason so you can check the ranking for yourself. Read our editorial policy.
Corrections
If you spot a price, feature or guarantee that’s wrong or out of date, whether you’re a buyer or a provider, please send us a correction with a link to the source. We check every correction against the primary source.
